WEBINAR
A webinar was conducted on topic “Failures in Concrete Structures” on 29th May 2021, organized by Department of Civil Engineering and the Department Association CESSA (Civil Engineering Staff and Students Association) in collaboration with St. Johns Group of Institutions. The guest speaker was Mr. Sudeesh Sadan (licensed and technically skilled Civil Engineer). The webinar highlighted the various defects in concrete and general causes of structural failures. It was conducted on Google Meet platform, around 200 students from different Engineering colleges within the state attended the webinar. At the end of the webinar, the doubts raised by students were also cleared by the guest speaker. It was a very informative and worthwhile session for all of the students.
The report summarizes the findings of the National Seminar on “Emerging Researches and Innovations in Civil Engineering” [ERICE’19] which was organized by the Civil Engineering department of SBCE, Elavumthitta on May 2nd and 3rd 2019. The event was inaugurated by the Mr. Shyju Nair, Zonal Head Technical Service Department, Ambuja Cement Limited in the presidency of Dr. Somi Sebastian, Principal, SBCE Elavumthitta. Welcome speech was done by Dr. E.V. Nampoothiri Head of Civil Engineering department and vote of thanks by Ms. Aswathy. S. Kumar, Asst. Prof. of Civil Engineeering Department. After the inagural section there was a one-hour class conducted by the chief guest Mr. Shyju Nair on the topic “Concrete: Past, Present and Future”. He shared his vast knowledge in the field of concrete technology. It is the very intresting section in the entire event.
There were more than 100 students participated from various colleges across India. The conference provided the opportunity of post graduate and graduate students to discuss about the innovation strategies in Civil Engineering field. The papers were presented on geotechnical, structural, transportation and environmental sections. The geotechnical, transportation and environmental sections are chaired by efficient faculties. Dr. Adersh, Professor, TKM College of Engineering Kollam, Prof. Renjith R, Assistant Professor Carmel College of Engineering & Technology, Alappuzha, Dr. Nivin Philip, Associate Professor, Saintgits college of Engineering, Kottayam, Prof. Sivabala, and Dr. E.V.Nampoothiri, Professor, SBCE Elavumthitta served as external judge for evaluation of paper presentation on various sections.
ERICE’17
ERICE’17 was the first national conference organised by the Department of Civil Engineering which was exclusively dedicated to the field of Civil Engineering and focuses on the need for revamping technical education.
The aim of the conference was to provide a platform for bringing researchers, faculties and students to disseminate their original research results, ideas and practical experiences. The papers were invited from all areas of civil engineering.
The inaugural meeting started at 10.00 am with the prayer song by our college choir. Ms. Lekshmi student co-ordinator, welcomed all the dignataries present on and off the dias and students. Chief guest Dr. N Ganesan, Professor, Civil Engineering Department NIT Calicut inaugurated the function by lighting the lamp. Dr. Gouri Antherjanam (CE Department), SBCE gave the welcome address, Dr. Somi Sebastian Principal SBCE gave the presidential address, and felicitation by Dr. E.K Bhass, HoD CE Department SBCE Pattoor. Vote of thanks given by Ms. Aiswarya S, ERICE Co-ordinator of SBCE. The inaugural programme ended at 11. 00 am.
The inauguration followed with a paper presentation in 4 venues. The presentation extended up to next day 4:15 pm. Around 250 papers were presented in different sections and best paper for each section was awarded with Rs.1000/-
The evaluators were Dr. E. Vasudevan Nampoothiri Dean (UG) and Professor (PG) SBCE Pattoor, Dr Nivin Philip, Associate Professor, Saintgits college of Engineering, Pathamuttam, Kottayam, Dr. Sajeeb R, Professor, TKM College of Engineering Kollam and Dr. B. Saraswathy, Professor TKM College of Engineering Kollam .
The campus of SBCEW was chosen as the site for survey camp. The camp included area calculation of the given plot in the campus, contour preparation, profile levelling, longitudinal levelling, fly levelling etc. The students were divided into different groups, coordinated by two staff for each group. The entire campus was surveyed by the students.
A half-day session workshop on ‘E-Tabs & SAP’ was conducted for the M.Tech students by M/s. CAD Point for enhancing the students’ knowledge in the various software’s to be used for the Analysis & Design of the various structures. The motive for conducting such workshop was to make the students aware of the software which they can apply for their project thesis work and if interested, the students can be trained in the college itself.
In order to make the students more perfect about the construction of structures, practical classes are organized by the department. For the sixth semester students, a practical class was arranged regarding the design of various structural components of the building along with the reinforcement details at SBCEW itself.

The environmental Engineering laboratories in the department of civil engineering at Sree Buddha College of Engineering provides excellent research facilities with well equipped with the latest analytical and specialised experimental equipment
Civil engineering students need vast training in surveying. The Surveying laboratory is fully equipped with modern surveying instruments and traditional instruments. This lab offers supplemental experience in fundamental land surveying to civil engineering students.
Materials testing laboratory is a well-established technique used to determine the physical and mechanical properties of raw materials such a steel, timber, brass, aluminium, mild steel rods etc., Civil engineering testing equipment is used in the quality control processes associated with the analysis of these materials. When it comes to quality control, manufacturers often use material testing to find the cause of stains, contaminations or product failures that can lead to quality and safety issues
The lab mainly caters to the needs of the undergraduate students AND post graduate students to conduct the experiments related to concrete and other construction materials such as tiles, cement, aggregates. The quality of construction materials including raw materials for making concrete and testing and evaluation of finished building materials such as concrete blocks, flooring tiles, paving blocks are undertaken by the lab for external agencies.
The Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory is spearheaded by a highly competent, dedicated, well qualified and experienced faculty. The laboratory has facilities for conducting practical classes for undergraduate programmes. The lab is well-equipped with testing equipment for evaluating all engineering properties of soils and rocks, including index properties, compaction characteristics of soils, permeability, compressibility, rate of consolidation and shear strength. The equipment ranges from the most fundamental to the most sophisticated
CIVIL ENGINEERING SOFTWARE LABORATORY
AutoCAD lab provides the following facilities – Exposure to different categories of building, Functional requirements of buildings, Preparation of 2D drawing, Preparation of 3D drawings, Application of CAD to Civil Engineering Drawing. Major equipment used are – 30 systems (8GB RAM) supporting AutoCAD, Primavera, Etabs, Staad.Pro, Ansys.
CIVIL ENGINEERING WORKSHOP
Civil engineering workshop empower the students to get practical knowledge of various concepts introduced in first year engineering studies. The course includes experiments like area & volume calculation of building and other component parts of building, brick masonry works and basic surveying using levelling instruments.
