EVENTS/ PROGRAMMES CONDUCTED IN THE DEPARTMENT

The various events/ programs conducted in the department are as follows:

WEBINAR
A webinar was conducted on topic “Failures in Concrete Structures” on 29th May 2021, organized by Department of Civil Engineering and the Department Association CESSA (Civil Engineering Staff and Students Association) in collaboration with St. Johns Group of Institutions. The guest speaker was Mr. Sudeesh Sadan (licensed and technically skilled Civil Engineer). The webinar highlighted the various defects in concrete and general causes of structural failures. It was conducted on Google Meet platform, around 200 students from different Engineering colleges within the state attended the webinar. At the end of the webinar, the doubts raised by students were also cleared by the guest speaker. It was a very informative and worthwhile session for all of the students.

ERICE’19

The report summarizes the findings of the National Seminar on “Emerging Researches and Innovations in Civil Engineering” [ERICE’19] which was organized by the Civil Engineering department of SBCE, Elavumthitta on May 2nd and 3rd 2019. The event was inaugurated by the Mr. Shyju Nair, Zonal Head Technical Service Department, Ambuja Cement Limited in the presidency of Dr. Somi Sebastian, Principal, SBCE Elavumthitta. Saraswathy, Professor TKM College of Engineering Kollam .

  • Survey camp: A survey camp was organized for the students of fourth semester in the department for ten days, so as to enhance the knowledge of the students in the practical field. The main aim of the camp was to make the students thorough with the use of various survey instruments to be used at site.

The campus of SBCEW was chosen as the site for survey camp. The camp included area calculation of the given plot in the campus, contour preparation, profile levelling, longitudinal levelling, fly levelling etc. The students were divided into different groups, coordinated by two staff for each group. The entire campus was surveyed by the students.

  • CAD Training: A training session for AutoCAD was arranged for the sixth semester students for ten days by the CADD Centre, Pathanamthitta in order to make the students proficient in AutoCAD. The building rules and the application of AutoCAD to be used for the permit in the Panchayat / Municipality were taught to the students during the training. The training was conducted at SBCEW.
  • STAAD Training: A training session for STAAD was arranged for the eighth semester students for ten days by the CADD Centre, Pathanamthitta in order to make the students proficient in STAAD pro. The main aim for conducting the training was to enhance the student’s knowledge in Analysis & Design of various Buildings and to help them to use the software for their Project work. The training was conducted at SBCEW.

Workshop on ‘E- Tabs & SAP’:

A half-day session workshop on ‘E-Tabs & SAP’ was conducted for the M.Tech students by M/s. CAD Point for enhancing the students’ knowledge in the various software’s to be used for the Analysis & Design of the various structures. The motive for conducting such workshop was to make the students aware of the software which they can apply for their project thesis work and if interested, the students can be trained in the college itself.

Practical Training classes of Structures:

In order to make the students more perfect about the construction of structures, practical classes are organized by the department. For the sixth semester students, a practical class was arranged regarding the design of various structural components of the building along with the reinforcement details at SBCEW itself.
